Some issues that arise require orthodontics surgical treatment when orthodontics alone cannot correct the problem. Generally, braces will have already been placed prior to a diagnosis. This treatment continues during and after surgery and during full healing time.
Surgical treatment does require the skill of an oral surgeon, and our expert orthodontist will work with them during the entire procedure.
When is Surgery Required?
Complete orthodontic x-rays and diagnostic imaging will be performed prior to the procedure.
Some examples of problems that might require orthodontic surgical treatment include:
Severe misalignments
Irregularities in the jaw bone
Front teeth protruding over bottom teeth (overjet)
Serious protruding or receding upper jaw
Orthodontic surgical treatment is most effective when bone growth is complete, thus males should be age 17 – 21 and females 14 – 16.
The Surgical Procedure and Its Aftermath
As mentioned previously, this surgical treatment must be performed by an oral surgeon in a hospital setting. A general anesthesia will be used and the procedure generally is several hours long. You will keep your braces on during the process to help stabilize the jaw bone and teeth.
Since this surgery is performed to realign the jaws and teeth, it will entail shifting, removing or altering bone. In order for the bone to be secured in its proper position, micro screws, bands or wires will be used which will gradually integrate with the bone.
Initial healing will require from six to twelve weeks. Our specialist here in Aurora will resume the orthodontic treatment previously started. The combined orthodontic and surgical treatments will need from one to three years for completion, with a few adjustments along the way.
When you leave our office following this combined treatment it will be an amazing sight to see. The symmetry of your face will be lovelier than it ever was and your confidence will soar.
